Product Description
The Mage is a next generation whitewater packraft, combining evolutionary improvements to the legendary Gnarwhal hull with performance features from the groundbreaking Valkryie. The result is the fastest, smoothest, and most responsive traditional whitewater packraft we’ve ever made.
The low volume center panel stern hull is longer and narrower than the Expedition and Gnarwhal, which increases the waterline for maximum speed and tracking. But it is lighter and has more cargo capacity for long trips than the Valkyrie.
A subtle increase in bow and stern rocker keep the Mage high and dry when launching off drops and punching features without sacrificing the increased speed.
A one-piece dropped floor and a full length inflatable pad maximize secondary stability, edging, and speed similar to the Valkyrie.
We topped it all off with a lace in whitewater seat, our patented 4-point thigh straps, backband, and whitewater footbrace for the best fit and control available.
The Mage is offered in both a whitewater deck and self bailing configuration, so you can configure it for your desired use and paddling environment. The self bailing drain holes feature mesh backed venturi flaps to increase speed and keep you drier especially when surfing.
What's New
The Mage is a new model for 2025, with the hull loosely based on the discontinued Wolverine. To improve, we made it lower volume, narrower, and longer to increase waterline, tracking, edge control, and responsiveness.
We added a one-piece dropped floor with a full-length inflatable pad to improve secondary stability, edging, and speed. This concept was adapted from the Valkyrie which has a multi-piece dropped floor. The multi-piece dropped floor is higher performance, but heavier, bulkier, and more complex to manufacture.
We also adopted the multi-point adjustable backband, offset D-rings, and lace-in whitewater top seat from the Valkyrie for optimum comfort and fit. The latest version of our patented 4-point thigh straps are better fitting and more comfortable. Â
Finally, we incorporated mesh backed venturi flap design into our self bailing floor drain holes. Venturi flaps allow water to drain out easily, but limit the ability of water to come in from the bottom which increases down river speed and keeps the floor dry when surfing.
Sizing is also new and standardized across other sized models like the Gnarwhal and Expedition. The goal is a true to size fit where your boat size should be close to your clothing or other gear like bike or kayak size.
Recommended Uses
Whitewater:
The perfect model for the intermediate to advanced whitewater packrafter, the Mage is ideal for leveling up your skill and performance in Class III-IV+ whitewater. The Mage is also the top performing whitewater self-bailer. For Class IV/V whitewater and kayakers, especially on shorter trips with less gear, we recommend the Valkyrie. The Mage is a better choice for longer trips with more gear.
Lightwater:
The Mage is a standout performer in lightwater, and it’s a great boat for packrafters looking to develop skills before progressing to harder whitewater. If you don’t plan on paddling anything more difficult than Class III, we recommend the Expedition or Gnarwhal for more versatility.
How Does It Compare?
Mage vs. Gnarwhal vs. Expedition.
Mage vs. Gnarwhal vs. Expedition. The Mage is superior across the board in whitewater. It's faster. It edges and holds an edge better. It tracks through features better. It carves and eddies better. Its easier to roll. But its not as beginner friendly.
- The Mage is the preferred choice for the intermediate to advanced packrafter.
- The Gnarwhal is recommended for the beginner to intermediate whitewater packrafter.
- The Expedition is the more versatile choice for a mix of flatwater, lightwater, whitewater and backpacking focused trips.
Valkryie vs Mage.
The Valkyrie is the highest performance in whitewater especially Class IV/V and our recommendation for kayakers or expert packrafters. The Mage is lighter, more packable, has greater cargo capacity, and is offered in a self bailer. Its our recommendation for maximum whitewater performance and versatility for intermediate and advanced packrafters.

Build Configurations
Self Bailer
The Self Bailing Mage is perfect for warmer conditions, quick entry and exit, and anyone that prefers a self bailing setup. The self bailing holes are oversized, mesh backed, and feature venturi flaps to reduce water infill and increase speed compared to traditional self bailing holes. Except when swamped by a feature, the new hole design offers similar speed to the whitewater decked model. If you swim, no dumping is required and you can just self rescue right back in.
Whitewater Deck
The Whitewater Deck is ideal for staying warm in cold conditions and maximizing performance in difficult whitewater. The Whitewater Deck features a large kayak style cockpit and one-piece PEX spray skirt rim (Spray skirts sold separately). Because the Whitewater Deck will not fill with water when pushing through a wave or hole, it maintains more speed and can punch through larger waves and stickier holes than the self bailing configuration.
Cargo Fly
Our innovative Cargo Fly internal storage system comes standard on the Mage. The Cargo Fly features an airtight zipper installed in the stern of the boat to allow you to store your gear inside the tubes. The system provides drier and more secure gear storage and improved paddling performance due to a lower center of gravity.
Internal Dry Bags may be purchased separately and are designed to work with the Cargo Fly system. The bags clip in place along each side of the tubes with a side release buckle and allow for better organization and weight balance than placing the contents of your pack loose inside the Cargo Fly. They also act as additional balanced air chambers to make it easier to get to shore in the event of a puncture.
Weight Capacity
The Mage is recommended for paddlers up to 230lbs. Larger paddlers should consider the Gnarwhal. Cargo weight recommendations are 20-30lbs for maximum whitewater performance, 50lbs for moderate whitewater, and up to 100lbs on extended trips on large rivers like the Grand Canyon.
Sizing & Specifications
Paddler Size Chart*
*The Mage is designed for a true to size fit with enough knee bend to engage the thigh straps, but keep your legs more extended for better downriver performance. If you are in between sizes, the smaller size will generally provide more positive thigh strap engagement.
Dimensions*
*Due to the handmade nature of our packrafts, dimensions are averages and will vary slightly from boat to boat.
Weights*
*Due to the handmade nature of our packrafts and natural variances in weights between different colors and production runs in our fabrics, all weights are averages and will vary from boat to boat.
**Base weight is the boat only. Kitted weight includes the seating and rigging. Complete weight is everything in the stuff sack at shipping.
